Character

Beautiful little deaf and partially sighted Ruby (born in the UK in 2024 and 7kg) is thought to be a Sheltie cross.

She is a lively and friendly girl thriving in her Dorset foster home, where she enjoys the company of two spaniels, a chihuahua, two rescue cats and a toddler, and loves time outdoors on walks and adventures.

Ruby was born deaf and partially sighted.  She is completely deaf and her sight is partial - she can see better on cloudy days than when there is more light, and sees better closer to the ground than above her.  Sometimes you will see her chasing a shadow.  Apart from her sight impairment and lack of hearing, Ruby is healthy, has been throughly vet checked and is due to be spayed in June.

Ruby loves human attention and is always excited about people coming to the home.  She likes greeting people out on walks (maybe a little wary of the occasional tall man!), and absolutely loves children - she gravitates to them.

She is a very social dog and enjoys meeting other dogs on her walks. Sometimes she gets over excited and barks when she senses a new dog she wants to greet.   Her best friend in the home is the male Show Cocker Spaniel, and her fosterer has noted she tends to gravitate to males for play.

Ruby lives with two cats. When occasionally she tries to play with them, she usually receives a smack from the cat and walks away.

Ruby is well behaved on her walks - currently she walks on a long line loosely held and follows her companion dogs (who have perfect recall).   She is reported also to come running at the smell of cheese!

Ruby is house trained and loves riding in the car - happily jumping in.

Ruby can guard high value lasting treats like hooves and yak milk chews from the other dogs but has no food aggression when humans are concerned.  She is also very happy to share treats on walks and isn't possessive.  If she snaffles something she shouldn't when out on a walk, she is happy to trade it for a little piece of cheese.

Lacking much of her sight and being completely deaf, Ruby can startle, so her fosterer advises blowing on her to wake her up or get her attention, and letting Ruby sniff new people rather than asking them to touch her unexpected - just to eliminate any anxiety on her part.

Ruby is a little more vocal than the average dog and may be especially so when settling into a new home.   She may experience separation anxiety (barking, not destruction), at first but her fosterer notes this ceased within two or three weeks.

Ruby is a busy little dog, energised and funny, often bringing a smile to her foster family's faces by playing with her toys, and absolutely loving her grooming time.

Type of Home Sought

Ruby would like a home with a dog companion, ideally.   She can also live with cats.

Ruby would love to be a family dog or have visiting children her home, as she loves the company of children.

Ruby is an active and playful young dog, so will need regular exercise and mental stimulation.

A loving home where someone is around most of the time, and who will understand the kind of enrichment she needs as a deaf and partially sighted dog,  and who are ready for a lively young dog.

Ruby would like a garden.
