Character

Don’t judge a book by its cover! This scarred face belongs to a sweet, affectionate and loyal partially sighted senior. Energetic for his years (born c.2015), and strong for his size (c.18kg), Luka’s Devon foster family say he’s very intelligent, quick to learn, sensitive, and very polite.

Luka is blind in one eye and has poor vision in the other - not that anyone would know!

Luka’s past life was on the end of a chain in Bosnia; out in all weathers, attacked by other dogs. His owner had plans to dump him in the woods, but luckily our rescuer intervened.

Luka gets on perfectly with the 11 other resident dogs in his Devon farm foster home. He has previously lived with a cat but recently attempted to chase one of the farm cats, so we would like to do further assessment if he is to live with cat(s).

Luka is an affectionate dog, liking nothing better than to sit by his human with his head in their lap. He has a very touching way of looking at you; and sometimes makes little chatty noises to show how content he is.

Luka has medium energy level - good walks followed by good sleeps.

He can be strong on the lead, so his new owner(s) must be able to manage him physically. That said, he’s getting much better at not pulling and leaning in.

He’s such a quick learner and such a clever dog that he would absolutely thrive doing scent work. Luka is quick to bond with his humans (male and female) and very happy to take instruction: an obedient dog.

Luka is completely food orientated - not unusual for a dog who’s known hardship - and a terrible scavenger given half the chance. He would turn over a bin, counter-surf, dig or even open the oven door if food is left even slightly accessible.

Luka sleeps nicely through the night in his crate. He is very clean in the house and would ‘howl the house down rather than toilet indoors’. He is an incredibly polite dog, doesn’t push past; he looks up to his people.  You can take things out of his mouth with no problem. His recall is pretty good and he knows several commands. He doesn’t travel well at the moment and needs to be crated in the car, but he is working on it!

Luka loves all sorts of people, has met (older) children and seems to get on with everyone, always liking a bit of attention.

Although curious and determined outdoors, Luka is very relaxed indoors; he enjoys looking out of the window but stays nice and calm. He settles down independently in the evenings, and although he loves a cuddle he is also happy to find a comfy bed and settle himself.

Luka currently lives on a farm. He does a great job as the ratcatcher in the tack room and feed store but would need to be kept away from livestock such as sheep and chickens if he was to live in a similar environment.

Luka may not be handsome, and he does need boundaries in place, but he is clever, loyal and sweet, and with him you will have a very special bond indeed.

This sweet, chunky boy with an awful past life is very easy to fall in love with.

Type of Home Sought

Luka is quite adaptable and could live in most settings and family arrangements. He hasn’t been an only dog before, so he might be the sort to dislike being left alone.

His new family will need to put measures in place to manage his determined scavenging behaviours and also continue his training.

He would need further assessment with cats. He can live with other dogs.

Moderately active home with someone who is around most of the time. A home who can provide mental stimulation and enjoy his affection and his intelligence as well as just giving him physical exercise.
