Character

Ducessa (or 'Duchess'  - born 2022, 27kg and in foster in Coventry - is affectionate, sensitive and bonds very strongly with her people.

If you are looking for an intelligent, loyal bestie, maybe a shepherd or collie type dog (but who comes with the bonus of only needing two shortish walks each day!)... Duchess is your girl.

Duchess is partially sighted - she can see a couple of feet in front of her but has no peripheral vision.

Duchess is still a work in progress, so her new person/ people will enjoy the prospect of continuing her training.

She has blossomed in foster but will always be a somewhat 'twitchy' dog.   Initially she was reactive to sound - barking - but her fosterer has been able to correct this behaviour in the home and notes how eager to please she is; she is super easy to train being both good and smart!

Duchess is already brilliant in the house; she loves to curl up on the sofa. She prefers being close to her person than bounding around, and is easy to manage. She travels well and sleeps through the night, enjoying a lazy morning. She’s not a greedy girl; prefers her walk before eating her breakfast.  She has always been clean in the house. Duchess is a loving, velcro dog - the kind that would like to sleep on your bed and be by your side.

Duchess is still sometimes a nervous dog on walks, when she can find unusual noises, traffic and people she does not know unsettling. She is unsure, needs reassurance, input from her owner. Her new home will work with Duchess to improve her confidence. Duchess likes an owner who radiates confidence and reasssures her.  Someone who can 'be the boss' and take the anxiety away from her. She also benefits from living with a confident dog friend and could live in a calm pack.

However, despite enjoying dog company (after careful introductions), she is really a people dog, so she would also be happy to be an only dog with an experienced, calm, confident owner.   She really needs her person more than anything.

It is thought Duchess is good with cats.

Although she seems an athletic dog, Duchess only needs a moderate amount of exercise - less than an hour a day.   She isn't one for rushing off or marching along, she prefers to potter about and sniff.   As she is so good on the lead and doesn't pull, she is very easy to walk and manage.

Duchess is beginng to show some delightful character traits - such as her 'pipe smoking' habit of blowing and puffing through her chops, which he fosterer finds very endearing, especially for such an elegant and beautiful girl!

Originally rescued from the streets of Romania, Duchess is very submissive to people she knows (happy to have food removed, feet wiped etc), but lacks confidence in the world. She is looking for someone or people who will enjoy giving her the right care in order for her to blossom.

Type of Home Sought

Adult home with some experience of rescue dogs, willing to put the time into making Duchess feel safe and confident. A home which wants to carry on and enjoys training. Shepherd or larger breed experience would be useful.

Duchess can live with another dog, but this dog must be calm, patient and kind, and dog savvy, and introductions must be done slowly with the separation options mentioned above.

She could also be an only dog.

We are told Duchess previously was fine with cats (in Romania).

Duchess needs a quietish household; not busy.

Duchess would love a home with a garden. She is looking for a home where people are around most of the time, as loves to be with people.
