Buster the Cockapoo, born in the UK in 2018 and a little overweight at 18kg, seeks a new home.
Buster has progressive retinal atrophy, known as PRA, a genetic degenerative condition that leads to permanent blindness. Buster still has some vision - he can retrieve a ball and can walk up and down steps now - but may lose his sight completely in time.
Buster is in foster with another dog, with whom he gets on fine. He meets dogs on walks happily and as he is fostered by a dog walker, gets to walk out with several of her doggie clients.
Buster has lived with cats but he will chase unfamiliar ones so careful, controlled introductions is imperative.
Buster loves his walks and will have as many as he is given! That said, he isn't high energy, he prefers sniffing and pottering, but he does love being outside and is currently joining three short walks each day. He pulls on the lead a little - enthusiasm - but is not a demanding dog to walk.
Buster is housetrained and sleeps through the night. He is a late sleeper; very fond of his bed and likes to be left alone there, as his own space. He travels well and can be left for short periods. He responds to his name and knows 'sit'.
Buster has shown some resource guarding tendencies - sometimes he doesn’t want to share space, his bed, his cuddle or his toy. He communicates this to other dogs politely; raising a lip, a grumble, something they can understand. For best practice he is also fed separately.
For the same reason, it is best not to try to remove toys or treats from Buster, and his fosterer tends to move away if she suspects Buster wants to guard her from another dog. His fosterer copes well with this and is experienced with resource guarding, but we are aware that it can be off-putting, so we are looking for a home that is aware of this tendency and knows how to manage it, ideally because they have some experience of the behaviour in dogs.
Buster is an older boy who is friendly, happy, affectionate, likes fuss (he puts his paws up when he wants a cuddle but politely doens't try to jump up on the sofa).
We have a full medical history for Buster; he is not currently on any medication.
Despite a few lumps and bumps common to his breed in middle age, and his being a little overweight, he still has plenty of life and love to give.

Type of Home Sought
We suspect Buster would be happiest as an only dog - he loves human company - although he will happily live with other dogs.

Buster would like a patient home who will give him time to settle and give him love when he wants.
Buster loves time outside so would like a garden and a couple of walks each day.
